Leading Code — How Builders Become Leaders in the Age of Emotional Intelligence, by Reghu Ram

The story

Leading Code is part memoir, part leadership playbook — the story of an introverted engineer's decade-long shift into leadership, and the frameworks he learnt along the way.

For a decade, Reghu Ram told himself he'd never become a manager. A shy, introverted engineer who trusted code more than conversation, he spent those years building systems, certain that leading people simply wasn't for him. Then it happened anyway — and this book is both the story of that shift and the playbook he wishes he'd had.

Drawing on more than two decades of experience spanning people, products, and technology in executive roles at SAP and Deutsche Telekom, Reghu maps the five-stage Builder to Leader Shift and introduces the Leading Loop: experience-tested frameworks for builders learning to lead. You will learn how to build credibility that outlasts your title, delegate without losing control, and turn decisions into stories your team wants to follow.

The audience

Builders eyeing the shift

Product and technical people weighing whether to make the leap from individual contributor into management — or already standing at the edge of it.

Newly promoted managers

First-time product and technical leads navigating the tactical mistakes nobody warns you about.

Quiet professionals

Introverts, thinkers, and anyone who's ever been told to speak up before they were ready to lead on their own terms.

The author

A self-confessed introvert turned “trained ambivert”, Reghu Ram began his career writing code and gradually found his way into leadership. He has lived through a failed startup and several successful product journeys, learning firsthand how resilience, adaptability, and experimentation are critical leadership skills required for navigating the messy, uncertain reality of building something from nothing.

Born, raised and educated in India and having moved to Germany two decades ago, Reghu has a rare opportunity to navigate two contrasting worlds: Indian collectivism and German individualism — a duality that has deeply shaped how he leads, communicates, and builds teams across cultures. He currently works as Senior Vice President, Fintech Products at Deutsche Telekom.

Leading Code is his invitation to move from building systems to building people, with reflection, empathy, and clarity  — a timely reminder that in an age of AI, emotional intelligence is what keeps leadership human.
